ori came to me via an ad in my employee newspaper. I was looking for a
companion for my beloved Katie-Cat and Cori (who was already spayed and FREE)
sounded like she'd be perfect. And in many ways she was. It also turned out
that she'd been badly abused. The woman who gave her to me admitted that "my
husband likes to kick her around." Consequently, Cori was terrified of men. I
credit my Dad with allying her fears. He would often come to work on my
little house, giving Cori plenty of time to get used to him. One day he was
sitting on a chair and she jumped on his lap. He didn't think anything of it
and simply petted her, but I sat there speechless.
Cori was a sweetheart who never weighed more than 7 lbs., but she let Katie
know from day one that she was in charge. And when the boys came to live with
us some ten years later, Cori took it in stride, giving up her "dominant"
title to Larry. She even stopped beating up poor Kate.
Though deaf in her later years, Cori functioned quite well until her 20th
year. She was a quiet, elegant beauty, who lived her days with grace. I miss
her terribly.
UPDATE 2006: Cori has been gone for seven years now, but she lives on in my memories. That's why when it came time to create a cat for my new booksellers mystery series, I immediately decided that Cori would be my role model. So when you see Miss Marple's likeness, and when reading the new stories, think of Cori-Belle and smile.
